Open it the first time

Phone Mirror is new and I'm one person, so macOS asks you to confirm before it runs. It takes a minute, and you only do it once.

Put it in Applications

Open Phone-Mirror.dmg from your Downloads folder. A small window appears. Drag Phone Mirror onto the Applications folder next to it.

Open it once. macOS will stop it.

Open Phone Mirror from your Applications folder. macOS shows a message saying it could not verify the app.

Click Done. Do not click “Move to Trash”.

Allow it in System Settings

Open System Settings (click the Apple menu at the top left of the screen) and go to Privacy & Security. Scroll down to the Security part.

You will see a line saying Phone Mirror was blocked. Click Open Anyway.

Confirm, and you're in

Click Open Anyway once more when asked, then enter your Mac's password or use Touch ID.

A small phone icon appears in the menu bar at the top right of your screen, and a Getting Started window opens to help you connect your phone. From now on Phone Mirror opens like any other app.

On macOS 14 (Sonoma) there is a shortcut. In your Applications folder, hold Control and click Phone Mirror, choose Open, then click Open in the message. Newer versions of macOS use the four steps above.
Why does my Mac warn me? Apple runs a paid programme that checks apps before they are shared. I haven't put Phone Mirror through it, so macOS can't vouch for it and leaves the choice to you. That is true of many small Mac apps. You don't have to take my word for it: see what the warning means and how to check the download yourself.
